For decades the biggest advertising channel was television. That is no longer true. In-app advertising, the placements served inside mobile apps, is now the single largest channel in the world at roughly 390 billion dollars, edging ahead of television and video at 354 billion and online search at 352 billion. Social media advertising follows at around 277 billion. The centre of gravity has moved into the phone, and specifically into the apps people live inside all day.
Attention moved into the app, and so did the assistant
This matters for AI visibility because the assistants are moving into exactly the same space. People increasingly ask questions without leaving the app they are in, and the answer that comes back is composed rather than listed. The surface that now attracts the most advertising money, the mobile app, is the surface where AI mediated discovery is growing fastest. Paid presence puts you in the app, but whether the assistant inside it recommends you is decided by your organic legibility.
Search advertising sitting almost level with in-app is the other half of the picture, because search is the surface AI is most visibly rewriting. Between them, in-app and search account for a huge share of paid attention, and both are being reshaped by assistants, as we set out in where the advertising trillion goes.
What this means for your business
If your buyers live in mobile apps, meet them there with paid presence, but do not stop at the impression. The value compounds when the content behind the ad is structured so the assistant curating that app can also name you unprompted. Think of in-app spend as buying the room and AI legibility as being the brand the room recommends. The non-text ways people search inside those apps are covered in visual and voice search.
