A billion people now use AI assistants

More than a billion people now use generative AI, and a quarter used ChatGPT in the past month. Here is what that shift does to being found.

For most of the internet's history, being found meant ranking. You optimised for a search engine, earned a position on a results page, and waited for the click. That model still matters, but it is no longer the whole story. A large and fast growing share of the world now asks an AI assistant first, reads the answer it composes, and often never scrolls a list of links at all.

The scale is hard to ignore. ChatGPT alone reaches an estimated 557 million monthly active users on its apps, and the wider field of generative AI is now used by more than a billion people. Just over a quarter of working age internet users say they used ChatGPT in the past month, a share that jumped sharply on the quarter before. When those people ask about a product, a supplier or a whole category, the assistant replies in prose. Your brand is either named in that answer or it is absent.

What changes when the answer replaces the list

A results page shows ten options and lets the reader choose. An assistant usually names a few, sometimes one, and frames them as a recommendation rather than a menu. That compresses the field. The brands that get cited capture the attention, and the brands that do not are not ranked lower, they are simply unsaid. There is no second page to be found on.

This is why generative engine optimisation has become its own discipline, distinct from the search work you already know. It is not about chasing a keyword. It is about being the kind of source an assistant can read cleanly, trust and quote: clear structure, factual claims it can lift without ambiguity, and content that answers the real question a person asked. We set out the fundamentals in what GEO actually is.

The traffic is concentrated, which cuts both ways

Among the assistants that send referral traffic back to the open web, one destination dominates. ChatGPT accounts for roughly 81 percent of measured AI referral traffic, with Perplexity, Copilot and the rest sharing what remains. For a brand with limited time, that concentration is useful. You do not need to be equally legible to a dozen systems at once. You need to be unmistakably clear to the few that people actually use, and clearest of all to the one most of them use.

Concentration also raises the cost of a single wrong answer. If the dominant assistant holds the wrong idea about your pricing, your coverage or your category, that error reaches a very large audience long before you ever see it. Getting the underlying content right is the only durable fix, which is the whole of how to get cited by AI.

What this means for your business

Assume a meaningful share of your prospects are now forming a first impression of you inside an AI answer, before they reach your website. That share is not evenly spread. In several fast growing markets adoption runs well ahead of the global average, and in one of them, Kenya, past month ChatGPT use is the highest measured anywhere in the world at 49.5 percent. If your customers sit in those markets, this is not a forecast, it is already how they shop.

The practical response is not to panic about the death of search, which is still enormous and still starts most journeys. The response is to make sure that when an assistant reads about your category, your brand is present, correctly described and easy to quote. That is a content and structure problem you can act on this quarter.

What does it mean to be cited by an AI assistant?

It means the assistant names your brand, or draws on your pages, when it composes an answer for a user. Unlike a search ranking, there is often no list to appear in, only the written answer, so you are either included in it or left out.

Does this replace search engine optimisation?

No. Search still starts most journeys and remains essential. Generative engine optimisation sits alongside it, because ranking well on a search page no longer guarantees you are named when the same question is asked of an assistant.
