GEO

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization is the work of becoming the source AI assistants reach for. Here is what GEO means and why it matters for your brand.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for the best option in your category, an answer comes back in seconds, often with a short list of named brands. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making sure your brand is one of the names that answer reaches for.

How GEO is different from SEO

Search engine optimization aims to win a ranked list of blue links. GEO aims to win a place inside a written answer that a person may never leave to click. The assistant reads the open web, decides which sources it trusts, and composes a reply. Your job shifts from ranking a page to being quoted in the reply. We cover the split in more depth in GEO vs SEO.

What GEO actually involves

Three things decide whether an assistant can use you. First, access: the AI crawlers have to be allowed to read your site, which comes down to robots.txt, your llms.txt file, and clean structured data. Second, clarity: pages that lead with a direct answer are far easier to quote than pages that bury the point. Third, authority: credible mentions and citations beyond your own domain are among the strongest signals that you are worth naming.

Why it matters now

Buyers are moving part of their research from a search box to a conversation, and an assistant usually names only a handful of options. If you are not among them, you are not in the room where the shortlist gets made. That is a visibility problem your rank tracker cannot see, because ranking well and being recommended are now two separate jobs.

GEO is not magic, and no honest tool can promise you a fixed spot in an answer. What you can do is make your brand eligible, readable and credible, then measure what changes. If you want to see where you stand today, run a free scan and read your real, labelled result.
